The Condition

Cannabis is the most widely used recreational drug worldwide. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), a branch of the U.S. Department of Health, estimated that 19 million people in the US had cannabis use disorder (CUD) in 2022.

The main reasons for the increase in CUD/CWS are the dramatic increase in THC potency (this is not your parents' cannabis) and the increasing numbers of people who use cannabis on a daily basis, along with growing public acceptance, increased legalization, ease of accessibility, and the perception that cannabis can be used to treat a variety of conditions.

Cannabis withdrawal can, in some people, develop within hours of last cannabis use driving them to use multiple times a day. These symptoms may be severe for many and typically include anxiety, irritability, cravings, sleep problems, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, restlessness, and depression as well as other physical symptoms. Importantly, these are often not recognized as withdrawal symptoms by patients or their healthcare providers.
